The large savannah sat alone in the medicine den, rolling a piece of moss beneath one forepaw. After a few minutes, the soft green vegetation was shaped like a ball, and the apprentice medicine cat swatted it at the wall. Minepaw sighed. There were no sick or injured cats to tend to and he'd eaten a while ago. He had nothing to do.
"Hurricanevortex?" the lean male called, getting to his paws. Some herb training would do both of them good.

The young medicine cat padded into camp, a clump of catnip in her jaws as she padded into camp. Walking into the den that currently was taken by her and Minepaw, a familiar voice rang throughout the den. "Oh! Minepaw, I didn't notice you there!" mewed Hurricanevortex, putting down the catnip and turning around to see him standing behind her. "What is it you need, Minepaw?" asked the serval, sitting down to listen to him. "I'm guessing you would like to do some herb training to pass the time?" added the medicine cat, stretching out and yawning as she had woken up not too long ago, even though she was just out of camp. She had woken and then went right out of camp after checking the herb supply and eating a squirrel.

Minepaw looked up, surprised. "Vortex! How did you know?" he asked, eyebrows raised. He hadn't seen his mentor get up this morning; he must have been asleep.

"I just guessed," mewed Hurricanevortex, smiling at Minepaw. "Now, want me to test you or do you want to memorize them?" asked the she-cat, standing up and walking to the herb supply, listening carefully.

He tilted his head. His mentor knew him so well. "Could you please test me?" Minepaw asked, pale brown tail lashing.

She nodded and pulled out ten different herbs, each one different. She showed two leaves, one chervil and one borage. "Which one is used to prevent infection?"

The tall male studied the herbs. "Chervil." Minepaw mewed, bending down to sniff them. That was easy enough.

She nodded, smiling. "Now fine me three herbs that can cure fever," mewed the serval. Hurricanevortex sat down, scanning for the three and looking at the ground so he didn't see where she looked.

He nodded, nosing through the herbs. After a moment, he pulled out a purple flower, small flowers that resembled daisies, and took the borage. "Lavender, feverfew, and borage." he decided, listing the names.

She smiled. "Correct, now find two or more herbs that prevent or stop infection," mewed the serval, sitting down and moving to the side.

Minepaw began to paw through the herbs. He then pulled out marigold and burdock root. The apprentice medicine cat wasn't entirely sure about the burdock; he knew it helped infected rat bites, but he didn't know if it was used for infections in general.

Hurricanevortex considered the burdock for a while. "I'm going to have to say no to the burdock root. It isn;t used for any infection, making it only useful for rat bites. Let me show you one that is easy to find and good for all infections," mewed the medicine cat, taking a leaf of chervil and placing it in front of him. "Once chewed, the juice from the chervil can help to heal and prevent infections," explained the she-cat.

Minepaw frowned. He should have known that! "Right," the tall male murmured, listening to his mentor's explanation.

"Now you find any herb, show it to me, tell me the name, and describe what it does. I'll tel you if you are correct," mewed the serval, and then Hurricanevortex added, "Don't worry. It's okay you didn't know that. That can be tricky. I messed up when I learned the herbs too."

The savanna nodded and pulled out a yellow flower. "This is celandine. It sooths . . . damaged eyes? You would trickle the juice into a cat's eye, right?" Minepaw mewed.
